Fatlip was founded by John Nelson and Matt Strand in August of 2001. The mission was to bring the funk back to ND. Based on the funky grooves of classic soul bands like Tower of Power and Steely Dan, the 10-piece band met much success during it's 3-year tenure. In 2003 members of Fatlip merged with members of Fargo-based Groove Union (founded by singer Rob Headlee) and took on that band's moniker.
