The band was founded in 1995 under the name The Scapegoats. The original lineup consisted of Dale Cook (guitar and vocal), Andy Lien (guitar), Jonathan Kotta (bass), and Matt Kuhlman (drums). After the departure of Andy the name was changed briefly to rotarty/analog with Andrew Nielsen filling in on guitar for a few shows. The last and final name change was to Captain Insano. The band had guest muscians including Brita Anderson and Andy Mercil.
Captain Insano was a mix of the amrep sound and the melvins slow dirge. They played shows around the area until 2000. They played originals with the occasional cover.
