* Booked one of the first, if not the first, "punk" show in the FM area in 1984 when he brought in the Vampire Lezbos (WA) to headline a show at the Dilworth Community Center. Locals [[Blacklisted]] and [[The Crowd]] opened. A video of the show exists although the last time the Vampire Lezbos came to town he mistakingly "borrowed" it to them. UPDATE 10/31/15: The video tape has been returned!
* Published one of Moorhead's first zines called 'Mark and Phil's Guide to Everything' in 1984 which lasted two issues. The title was changed to 'Burnt Toast' and printed three issues, the last of which was printed in Washington, D.C. where Phil lived 1985-1986.
* Was the original guitar player for [[godheadSilo]] and played in only their first show before a dispute between him and Mike resulted in him quitting.
* Created [http://www.yahtzeen.com yahtzeen] in 1992 and published eleven issues before moving from print to the web.
* Together with [[Derek Wilde]] promoted dryhump '98 which aimed to bring together the DJ and punk scenes. Taking place at the now closed First Avenue in Fargo it featured a mix of local DJ's and bands sharing the stage. dryhump '98 also featured an early morning kickball game pitting ravers vs the punks and a later in the day basketball game pitting indie rockers vs brit poppers.
* Created kate'zine, a zine about Kate Moss, as an offshoot of yahtzeen. Two issues were printed and it lived shortly as a web site afterwards.
* Created fargogirls.com (defunct) which consisted of one new polaroid a day of a different girl from fargo. As dirty as it sounds like it could have been, it wasn't.
* Created duffysjukebox.com (defunct) in an effort to remove the Dave Matthew's Band from the jukebox at Duffy's Tavern in Fargo.
* Created [[madonnaRama]], an annual Valentine's day show featuring local bands performing covers of Madonna songs in a talent show format with style, interpretation and overall judging categories.
* Has possession of the "sticker door" from the now closed [http://ralphscorner.com Ralph's Corner Bar]. Other Ralph's memorabilia purchased at auction are the booth he first asked Jessica out on their first date, three bar stools, two urinals, a bathroom sink, and 12 of the 18 chairs he originally bought...the others have been passed on to others.
* Is the 2004 Ralph's Corner Fantasy Football League Champion
* Created the Fargo Band Family Tree with [[Ryan Anderson]]
* Designed packaging/sleeve for Big Block's "Top Sluggers" 7" compilation

Punk rock from Fergus Falls, MN. Ryan and Monty came up with the name while bored in high school. Anatrek = Anarchy + Star Trek, two things we thought were stupid. We combined the two symbols, added "monkey" (not sure why) and called it a band.

In 1993 we actually started playing together as a band (what a concept!), switching guitar players and practice spaces until we hit the final lineup.
*Booked the very first "punk rock" shows at the old Kaddatz Hotel in Fergus Falls.
*Came close to playing Cornstock after submitting a tape that featured dialogue from a Brady Bunch episode and a very crude bootleg of a Steel Pole Bathtub show.
May 1994 - Kaddatz Hotel, Fergus Falls, MN with [[Orange 17]], [[Haul]] and [[Grammahead]] (FF).

== Highlights ==
*With the help of [[Mark Botschner]], booked the very first "punk rock" shows at the old Kaddatz Hotel in Fergus Falls. Booked the second one, too. Got roped into working out the logistics of the third despite the fact that by the time all was said and done, 7 bands played, including a very young Dillinger 4.

*Published six issues of Carothers Brothers with Lee Jensen from about 1994 to 1996. People have finally stopped asking whether or not I dislike them or think they're annoying. Before Carothers Brothers, I published two issues of Sally's Lowrider (where Lisa Renee was conceived) and an issue of Burning Sensation.

*Was an early donor to Fargo's short-lived DIY Center. Booked a couple of shows and ended up getting calls from bands for the next four years.

*Also was behind Carothers Brothers Online (just an archive of old stuff) and Scott Wolf Zine, which later became Emo Pussies. Among others, [[Lee Jensen]], [[Phil Hunt]], [[Todd Holdman]] and [[Phil Leitch]] contributed to Emo Pussies. All three are now defunct, swallowed up with all of the other crap on early Geocities and AT&T homepages.

*Was involved with Yahtzeen in its digital form since 1996 or so.

*Once co-hosted [[Coach and 6 Records]]' online radio show "Off Broadway" and "fixed" an otherwise bland interview with [[800 Million]] by pretending that [[Micah Dahl]] was actually [[Minot]]'s [[Micah Scott]].

*Wrote one column for [[Mike Byzewski]]'s Readyset...Aesthetic!

*Assembled the first Fargo Band Family Tree, though sadly it lacked branches.
'''UPDATE 03.19.2018: We're back!!! If you have in the past 18 months asked for access, please ask again. Email us at support@fargobands.yahtzeen.com and we will hook you up. Now, if you are a young Fargo-Moorhead scenester (like 35 years or younger) and are the scene know-it-all, we want to recruit you to fill in the gaps from 200X-current. Help! '''

The Fargo Band Family Tree currently has {{NUMBEROFARTICLES}} pages including bands, band members and record labels. First time visitors may want to learn what a [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki wiki] is, how it works and how to [[Quick help|contribute to the FBFT]]. The Fargo Band Family Tree is intended to be a mostly non-biased, factual historical reference to the Fargo/Moorhead indie music scene and it's six degrees of separation with other closely related scenes.

*Due to excessive spammers we now require that you contact us for access. It's still free and completely open, we just ask that you please create an account or have us reinstate a previous account.
*Please keep self-promotion to a minimum. We do strongly encourage bands to use FBFT as a resource in promoting yourself, just try to keep the hype to a minimum.
*Feel free to use the "discussion" tab on each page to discuss whatever you desire with regards to bands or individuals. Obviously you please keep it civil.
*The decade and alphabetical listings are for Fargo/Moorhead bands.

== Fargo Band Family Tree ==
Originally FBFT was created to document local bands and their lineage so our main focus remains the [[Fargo/Moorhead|Fargo-Moorhead]] indie scene. You can find bands by name (using the alphanumeric links) or by decade if you can remember when you think you saw them.

== Other Bands ==
We quickly found that not only does the Fargo scene spread as people and bands move but that other regional scenes wanted to be included. We've decided to cover the states of Minnesota and North Dakota and leave it at that.
== Pages That Need Some Loving ==
If you'd like to contribute but aren't quite sure where to start you can take a look at all the [[:Category:Stub | stub pages]]. Stub pages are pages that have very little to no content on them yet but have been created.

== Branching Out ==
While the idea of attempting to become the ultimate universal band family tree is an interesting idea, it's too much for us to want to deal with. We love the Fargo/Moorhead scene and that's our passion. We would love to help others duplicate this effort (not that this is difficult by any means) and work together to standardize and interlink where possible. Contact either [[Phil Leitch|Phil]] or [[Ryan Anderson|Ryan]] if you're interested.
== A few things to watch out for ==
*If you add a band, please add it to a city, decade and the appropriate letter of the alphabet. That'll help keep things organized.
*Please be consistent in both case and spelling! We want everything to link together nicely, so we need everything to be consistent.
*We don't care what your super special punk rock name is... please don't use it here. Again, we're trying to link as much together as we can, so please use real names or don't use 'em at all.
*If you have any questions about how to format pages, or you don't know what you're doing, don't hesitate to e-mail us. ryan@yahtzeen.com, phil@yahtzeen.com
Category tags allow category index pages to be automatically created reducing much of the extra work you would have to do placing bands and/or people on their appropriate pages. Please add the category tag at the very bottom of the page you are creating/editing.

Here is a list of currently recommended tags and directions when necessary:
==== On Band Pages ====
*<nowiki>[[Category:City Name]]</nowiki>: City name should be the town the band is from. Please use what makes the most sense, for example Twin Cities area bands should just use Minneapolis and Fargo/Moorhead area bands should just use Fargo.
*<nowiki>[[Category:Decade]]</nowiki>: Decade the band existed in the form 70's, 80's, 90's, 00's, etc. A band from the 80's would have the tag <nowiki>[[Category:80's]]</nowiki>. Please only add the Decade Category tag to Fargo/Moorhead bands for the time being.
*<nowiki>[[Category:Active/Inactive]]</nowiki>: If the band has played a show in 2006-2007, list as active. If they haven't, list them as Inactive.
*<nowiki>[[Category:Phantom]]</nowiki>: If the band played less than three "public" shows ("public" meaning an actual venue and not a house party), list as Phantom.

==== On Bio Pages ====
==== On Record Label Pages ====
== Outside the family tree ==
What does this mean? Our original intent was for the FBFT to document the Fargo scene and it's related bands and members. The family tree currently considers Fargo-Moorhead along with the states of Minnesota and North Dakota to be included in the tree. Portland, OR is also fair game to be included. If you think we've missed any cities or regions that have an important connection to Fargo-Moorhead please contact [Phil Leitch|Phil] or [Ryan Anderson|Ryan] and let us know.

For bands/projects outside the scope of the FBFT please provide an outbound link, for an example see the link to Anchorhead under [[Todd Holdman]] (This of course is now a bad example because we've now included Minneapolis bands).

== Phantom Bands ==
Originally bands that either had never played at least three shows were considered phantom bands and appropriately marked. The new FBFT covers this better since we have more space to expand further on the band so just be sure to mention it somewhere on their page.

*<nowiki>[[Category:Phantom]]</nowiki>: Phantom bands should include this in the category section at the bottom of their band pages. All bands considered "Phantom" have already been edited to show this addition.

== Photos ==
You may add photos to the Fargo Band Family Tree and we highly encourage you to upload your file(s) using the 'Upload File' link in the toolbox to the left. Uploading your file to the FBFT will ensure that it will remain with it and not be subject to the external link changing, the site disappering or other factors.

Our preferred image size is 320x240 (or 240x320) in order to maintain a consistent look throughout the FBFT. For images that don't scale to those dimensions we just ask that you are in the size range.

The Fargo Band Family Tree creates a thumbnail version of your image, so there it is not necessary to upload a small and large image.
*<nowiki>[[image: image_name.jpg|thumb|left]]</nowiki>:Example of image code that will create a thumbnail and float the image left.
== Templates ==
We'd like to maintain a consistent look throughout the Fargo Band Family Tree so please use these templates if creating a new page.
To use the templates select one, then click 'edit', copy the code and then paste it into the new page you create.
== Venues ==
Currently we are not including pages to cover venues.

== Record Labels ==
We are including [[Record Labels|record labels]]. If you wish to add one please follow the format of an exising entry (see [[Dart Records]] as a good example).

== Zines ==
For the time being please provide external links to zines.
== Highlights ==
*With the help of [[Mark Botschner]], booked the very first "punk rock" shows at the old Kaddatz Hotel (http://www.fergusarts.org/rental.html) in Fergus Falls. Booked the second one, too. Got roped into working out the logistics of the third despite the fact that by the time all was said and done, 7 bands played, including a very young Dillinger 4.

*Founded the band [[Anatrek Monkey]] with [[Monty Botschner]]. Sorry.

This one, co-created with [[Phil Leitch]], finally has branches.

Exit 99 was an all-ages alternative and metal venue located somewhere around the junction of I-94 and I-29 (if memory serves correctly). The place was around in 1991 and '92. I believe it was shut down due to insurance risks or something. Bands like [[godheadSilo]],[[Apathy Earthworm]], [[Tempest]], [[Camel Paw]] and [[Cerberus]] frequented this joint.

'''Kafe Kosmos''' or "Cafe Kosmos" was a downtown [[Grand Forks]] youth center that had frequent weekend shows. Many local acts ([[Hadley Freng]], [[Strap Hanger]], and [[Imipolex G]]) had long-standing invites to play there. Regional and inter/national bands also played there, including Red Monkey, lowercase, [[Mothmus]], [[Midnight Evils]], and others.

The building had residents living above the showspace, causing complaints during loud rock-n-roll shows.

''An articulation of absurdly lo-fi audial experiments begun in Apartment 2, circa 1995...

Aaron began recording film and television samples over long and repetitive guitar riffs while drunk. Jeff began dabbling in keyboards and algorithms. Jason showed up occaisionally and contributed little. A performance was scheduled...

Originally, the set was to be performed by Aaron and Jason, playing borrowed/stolen guitars. The two would engage in an improvised, call-and-response interplay of clean guitar phrasings while obscure samples played nearly inaudibly in the background. After one practice session, it was determined that this was a stupid idea.

A new and decidedly better idea was conceived in which Aaron would play guitar, Jason bass, and Jeff drums. Practice sessions were held for three days at the Vinyl Connection record store where Aaron worked. Material that had been developed almost exclusively on guitar by Aaron in the preceding months found new and evolved voicings in the three-piece mode, and several "songs" were composed.

The trio, calling themselves Madison Square Garden, opened for a tech-savy cadre of pretentious rich kids playing Robert Fripp-style soundscapes over found-percussives, and a punk band from Florida who, having been turned away at the Canadian border, retreated to Fargo in need of gas, food, and alcohol.

Jeff wore a beautiful kimono and played exceptionally, beating out rhythms in tandem with Jason's down-tuned, Jaco Pastorius-meets-Joe Preston-style bass fuckery. Aaron told dirty jokes to the audience through a distortion box while teasing groans and screams from his guitar, breaking a few strings along the way.

After the show, the three drank heavily, had breakfast at The Iron Skillet, and never played together again.''
well i guess the highlight, would be we only played one show. It was for Jacinta's birthday, we opened Jeff was only like 20? we had to con him from working at the forum overnight, and Susan just was in town, she had a nice new haircut. that was my drumset, that i bought with a years worth of back pay form KDSU. I think our songs named included "Haunted house" i taped the show and still have it somewhere. Dreads were still in effect. It mght have been Al's first show in Fargo. I just remember Jacinta was wasted before things even really got started. I'm pretty sure she picked a fight with Chad, or Mike. That was also my first show at Ralphs.

Binge aka The Bedspins was formed about 7 years ago when 2 alcohol fueled individuals(Holls and Matty) contacted me. They needed a drummer to fill in for the Battle of the Bands. I agreed and after a week of practice we played the battle of the bands and ended up winning the whole damn thing. Thus Binge was born. We started playing all around the Fargo/Moorhead area anywhere that would have us. Some places opted not to have us play again because we would all be blacked out drunk at the end of our set and sound like shit. We did eventually get more serious and added Kent to our line up. He added some new material as well as vocals. It was the kickstart we needed. We continued to play shows and record a 7 song demo. Shortly after the demo was recorded Kent left the band to pursue his own project. With no lead guitar player we asked Holly's long time friend Josh to join the band and he accepted. Josh was with the band until the very end. Everything was going well and shows were lined up. We also got on a punk rock compilation from a small record label out of Canada as well as we where about the get a booking agent and start to play the Midwest. But as fate would have it a bunch of bad shit came our way and the band suddenly disbanded. I guess sometimes its better to break up when you are on top instead of trying to keep holding on. Our demo never got released so here it is for anyone who cares. This is going to be the most proper release it will ever get. I want to say thanks to my band mates and fans(especially Russ) for the support. The band also wishes to thank Juni for recording us. Take Care Everyone, Uppy P.S.

Fakeproject is a Fargo group first conceived in February 2001 and finally implemented in Fall 2001. Their output consisted mostly of hardcore electronic music, usually elaborating on a single theme. Compositions often featured lengthy expositions on a single beat, jarring transitions, and surveillance-derived samples. Fakeproject was slowly dissolved, disassembled, scrapped for parts, and smelted for precious metals when Mr. Fort had to leave Fargo for an extended period of time. In spite of this, both Dan and Shaun continue to write music to this day. Dan now goes under the moniker "Fake" and "The Fakeproject Corporation of America". These projects are representative of a new body of work. With Fakeproject, the work is not only music, it includes art, political action, video, and many other things. Fake, Fakeproject, and the Fakeproject Corporation of America have never been strictly one medium, one message, or one person.

== Members ==
The primary members of Fakeproject were:
*[[Dan Reetz]]
*[[Shaun Fort]]

Fakeproject, however, never operated in isolation and had many, many contributors.
These included:
== Contributors ==
*[[Chris Moose]](samples and critcism, also previously the better half of Airhandler)
*[[Andy Filer]](samples, photos, criticism, and technology)
*[[Amanda Irvine]](vocals)
*[[The United States Government]](without which, Fakeproject would have very little to write about)

== Highlights ==
The band's first show was in the ill-fated space above the Moose Lodge, a party put on by the ever-brilliant St. Vitas (Casey Borchert). Mike Dagen of the Abandoned Scout Camp ran sound. This show provided both the motivation and the contacts for all other Fakeproject activities, including later anti-war and anti-Bush shows. Fakeproject was probably best known for their performance at the Fargo Winter Carnivale. The performance featured intense live computer music synced almost perfectly to a video collage of surveillance footage, anti-war sentiment, and archival footage from the Prelinger Archives. That performance, and the next year's subsequent performance by Fake, were high-water marks in Fakeproject's creative output. Around that time, Fakeproject also became acquainted with the brilliant Ken Parker, of Not To Be Mixed With Any Other Chemicals, who was also later associated with the Abandoned Scout Camp.
The group was never signed and, being resistant to commercial enterprise, made only half an attempt to get their music commercially published. They produced a single complete album: "Oversight". This album was run in an edition of 200. The album was hand-produced on CD-R, with a screenprinted cover that folded out into a poster. As with everything Fakeproject related the album featured themes of surveillance.

Prophet Swich is a band formed in 1998 by some crazy creative cats with too much time (and substances) on their hands. They featured all original material. Their sound it quite distinctive.

== Highlights ==
Unfortunately these cats who worked incredibly hard on their music only played one live event at a Halloween party in Moorhead, MN. It was a great show and it was a very large party. One of the fans in the crowd claimed it was her best Halloween ever because of the bands set.
Another interesting side note is that when the lead singer [http://www.soundclick.com/mysticpain Mysticpain] was at the [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rob_Zombie#Formation_of_White_Zombie Rob Zombie]] show with [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fear_Factory Fear Factory]] and [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monster_Magnet Monster Magnet]]... he went to take a piss between bands and a person approached him and said "aren't you the lead singer of Prophet Switch?"
This was pleasing to the band and they are all very greatful for all the fan appreciation for their only live performance.

After this live show due to circumstances beyond the bands control, they were forced to break up and continue on with their endevors.
After the break up a few years later Mysticpain and Michael teamed up with a member of [http://www.myspace.com/thekrims The KRIMS] Matty...This band was called 20FT Mustache (later shortened to 20FT) and they also went through a variety of drummers including The current lead singer of the band [http://www.myspace.com/nineeyes 9 EYES]. Another drummer they teamed up with is Chris who is married to the lead singer and rythym guitarist of the now dismembered [http://www.myspace.com/binge1 Binge]of which Uppy was also druming for. Chris also is a musician and was in a band in Fargo, ND [[Downer]].

All is not lost, however, from this one time band. It is almost like the refuse to be forgotten.
And for good reason! These four dudes created incredible original tunes that are very melodic and beautifully constructed. They have a rough demo they made in their practice space and this is what
still lives on today so the whole world can celebrate the sonic creativity achieved by Prophet Switch. You can check out the entire demo at [http://www.soundclick.com/mysticpain Mysticpain's Site] You can also [mailto:mysticpain@yahoo.com Email]the band and they will send you an MP3 copy of the demo free of charge! Now you can't beat that!

To get your free demo from Prophet Switch make sure you include '''PROPHET MP3''' in the subject line!!!! Anything other than '''PROPHET MP3''' will just be deleted. Serious inquiries only please!
After getting more information from the band members this page will be updated accordingly.
8-25: I am currently the Yahtzeen resident hobo. My company closed its doors rather abruptly so I'm madly assembling my resume and portfolio. If you're looking for a designer with lots of production experience, a portfolio that needs strengthening and a whole lot of other (mostly legal) skills, let me know.
