A highly charged Power Trio preceding the formation of Hammerhead. Played in Fargo/Moorhead for about 2 years at Kirby's, Ralphs, Broadway Junction, and many late night parties in the area.

A classic Fargo band, in that they were usually dressed in insulated work boots, worn jeans over thermal long johns, double knitted stocking caps and winter coats. Paul Erickson could usually be found behind the drum kit in a pair of Sorrel boots.

There was a second incarnation of Floored in Mpls from 1994-1995 consisting of Andy Bahn, Clair Grupp and Rob Bernham. Although a good sounding band, this trio was a far cry from the original lineup.

*Andy Bahn Guitar and vocals
*Paul Erickson Drums
*Paul Sanders Bass and vocals

Testimony Andy Bahn
Although whatever power the band had was generated by the rhythm section of the two Paul's (Paul Erickson or Frankie Machine on Drums and Paul Sanders or Thumpy on bass), Floored was actually more my baby. Paul Erickson always wanted to step out front of the drum kit, but he could never find a drummer meeting his standards to play in front of until Jeff Mooridian had honed his chops through hours and hours of solitary playing. The Jeff Mooridian of December's Children was a good drummer, but had not yet reached a level that would eventually surpass all of Paul Erickson's expectations.

And Thumpy, truth be told, was a damn good bass player (In my mind, Thumpy is always the bass player and Frankie Machine is the drummer), but once he heard the genesis of Hammerhead that Paul E (now, Roky Gremlin) was creating on Bass with Jeff(Renny) on Drums and I (Roly) on guitar, his heart began drifting away from Floored. Roky's Bass lines and Renny's drumming were exactly the sound Thumpy (Rummy) wished Floored had. Despite my protestations to Thump that Floored was the band that would break away from the Fargo scene, I think he knew Hammerhead was the band with the big sound.

My impressions of playing with Thumpy and Frankie Machine were similar to taking a ride down a mountain. Frankie was the mountain - rock solid with varied terrain including flower filled meadows and treacherous steep rocky cliffs. Thumpy was the road and he could lay down some smooth asphalt. The problem (or asset) of Thumpy is that he never chose the easiest way down the mountain and often preferred the rocky cliffs to the meadows. I had to ride down that mountain and I didn't have a car or a bike. I did not even have a skateboard. All I had at my disposal was a large toy Tonka dump truck painted yellow. It was a vintage one made entirely of steel and the paint was fresh with no rust and greased bearings, but taking that ride down the mountain on Thumpy's roads was perilous - to say the least. In the beginning, more often than not, I'd ride that yellow Tonka truck with my knees to my chin and ass hangin' off the swinging tailgate right straight into the ditch rolling a couple of times before ending in a pile under a large spruce tree. I suspected that most people who came to see us were there to see the spectacle of the inevitable crash. But, with practice, I adjusted to the barely noticeable play in the steering on the Tonka and could ride the pavement Thumpy laid down over even the worst grades on the mountain of Frankie. Oh, there were harrowing moments - to be sure - and many times I was screeching around hair-pin turns on two wheels with my body contorted into positions unseen before as I hit these turns doing 85 to 100 mph. But, I'd make it to the bottom, leap to my feet and throw my fists in the air screaming, "Come on Motherf#ckers! Is that all you got? Let's take the next ride down the north face."

Highlights
They did a mean cover of Age of Aquarius by the 5th dimension.
Paul Sanders was an amazing bass player and Paul Erickson was a wonderful drummer, and in this guitar player's opinion each one's best instrument, all you Hammerhead fans. (Andy Bahn)

Shows
There were several shows at Ralphs as well as some teenage hangout on main street in Fargo (Brodaway Junction?). We played at MSU once, as well. Mostly, like the other bands, we played to parties in the basement of Paul Erickson's most recent dwelling. For Floored, that was the small house on the north west edge of Moorhead.

I remember playing a party during the summer of 1989 after the Geardaddies played at Kirby's. The basement was packed and we were on our third or fourth song. If I remember right, the song we were playing was Concerto in D[major]. I could see a light coming through the packed basement from a distance. My guitar solo was coming up just as the light burst through the bodies standing in front of me and focused on my face and guitar. I hit my pedal and was off, not noticing that the two Pauls had stopped playing. I was caught in the clutch of Rock music and played my solo all the way through with the light shining in my face until the Police Officer gave me a shove and I stumbled backwards into the wall of Amps. Yeah! Rock and Roll!!

Discography
No known recordings exist.

I have a few live recordings of them that I'll try to find and post a short snippet of them. (Phil Leitch)

Paul Erickson is the keeper of all things Floored. I have a couple of recordings, and otherwise just a lot of great memories of the greatest band never heard.

One professional four-song, four track recording by Jeff Mooridian's father. It actually sounded very slick and well-produced. Only Paul Erickson would have a copy, unless someone could track down Jeff's dad.

I have a copy of a tape by Geeks, an early version of Floored with the original lineup. Paul Erickson has several recordings, I think. Phil, I'd be willing to send you the tape if you'd post it and send it back to me. It has songs from Diddy-Wah-Diddy on the other side. I might be able to scrounge up some more recordings as well from the Moleman. (Andy Bahn) cool site, btw.
About
Most of the inspiration for this band comes from Steve Mann. He wrote some fabulous songs, such as Jamaica, Joker, Las Vegas and So Long. I have one recording and it is still pretty good after nineteen years. The lead guitar player tended to make his share of blunders, yet stumbled through the songs somehow. Paul Erickson Drummed and Thumpy Paul Sanders played bass. This band had some potential, but it was never going to sound like Hammerhead. I don't know exactly what it sounded like (Run, Westy, Run? The Kinks?), but it was very original. Lots of changes in Steve's songs and despite the Attention Deficit disorder of the lead guitar playing, the guitar licks were quite creative as well. Steve had a great Screaming voice that was probably inspirational to the Hammerhead boys. (Andy Bahn)

Highlights
The last refrain of Joker has this convoluted verse sung in four part harmony.

Do it all the time;

Two Nickles to Rub;

Stop on a dime;

While you sit in a tub, sit in a tub (repeat)

Classic nonsensical lyrics by Steve Mann.

Shows
There was a show playing for some fraternity at NDSU. I have no idea how we landed that one. But, since we thought we were worth at least some free beer, and yet were required to buy glasses, we decided it was fair to sneak into their kitchen and steal a 25 lb roll of sausage.

And, of course, there was the infamous night in the summer of 1988 at Kirby's. It was hot and we had all stripped down to our boxers. I was concentrating on my leads when I looked up and saw Steve Mann buck naked with his hairy ass facing me and standing at the end of the stage facing the audience. Kirby's son pulled the plug and threw us out telling us we would never play Kirby's again. A couple of name changes later and Floored was on Kirby's stage (we eventually had the plug pulled on us as well, but not for being naked and rather for being too F$cking loud).

I think it would help to explain the naked incident at Kirby by reminding everyone how hot that summer in Fargo was. I remember it as being blistering hot. Steve and I shared an upper apartment with a couple of other friends in Fargo and there were many parties that went late into the evening. In the beginning there were lots of pretty girls, but as the alcohol levels went up and the music got louder eventually the pretty girls all left. By the end of the night there were anywhere from 5 to 20 guys dancing to music (doing the "softshoe") and stripping down to nothing as the temperature rose in the apartment.

The band practices in Paul's house in Moorhead also tended to heat up fast in the confined basement filled with several big tube amplifiers throwing off heat. It seemed the natural thing to do to strip down while drinking more beer as the basement heated up. By the last song it was customary to be completely naked with our guitars slung low and our pieces hanging over the top of the guitars (if you were impressed by Jimi Hendrix playing with his teeth, there was a trick I did in the basement that may have impressed you even more - The Beatles White Album, "I got blisters on my fingers"...you don't want to know, believe me). The summer of '88 has long been referred to as "the naked summer" by many of the boys present for a multitude of reasons.

Paul Sanders started a band called moreRAM (which released a 7-inch on Meat Records) and Paul Erickson and Jeff Mooridian started up Vaz.
Testimony Andy Bahn
Okay, let me take a stab at it...

Hammerhead was an idea that was borne in the mind of Paul Erickson. But, first, I should give a little history. Bear with me.

For my part, it all began outside of Fargo at a party in Minneapolis in 1984. I was carrying a record of The Rollingstone's Out of our Heads. I put it on the record player and struck up a conversation with Steve Mann who was an admirer of the Stones also, but an even bigger fan of The Who. By the end of the night we had decided to go buy some guitars and form a band. I was 19 years old, Steve was 18 and had just graduated from High School.

Steve went up to Moorhead State University for his freshman year where he met Paul Erickson from Wolford North Dakota. Paul Erickson was a musician and knew how to play just about anything better than any of us. But, we were from Duh Big City and could introduce Paul to cool bands like The Replacements and Husker Du (for the lad from Wolford, puck rock consisted of The Cars and The Romantics). I kept working in Minneapolis at a Sinclair Gas Station. My guitar teacher was a book. Steve learned how to play from Paul Erickson. We met up the next summer and Steve had advanced to playing with five strings on his guitar under the tutelage of Paul Erickson's patented learn to play the guitar one string at a time method. I knew a few chords and scales, so we convinced a couple of high school guys to play bass and drums (Jeff Hoelscher and Rob Bernham) and started a band called The Mess. By the end of the summer we had made a recording on a cassette tape called "Skinny."

Steve went back to Moorhead and I enrolled at St. CLoud State University. Steve and Paul met Moorhead residents Paul Sanders and Jeff Mooridian and formed December's Children. The next summer Paul Erickson moved to Mpls and Steve Mann stayed in Fargo. Paul took Steve's place in The Mess's lineup and the first version of Floored was born. We played 7th Street Entry in August and a recording was made. I think I have a copy somewhere.

In the fall, Paul Erickson went back back to Moorhead and I went to St. Cloud. More December's Children (Paul Sanders goes to Madison and Mark Schroeder fills in on Bass while he's away) and a year goes by. I leave St CLoud in the spring of 1988 and move to Moorhead to join my mates for Rock-n-roll. Diddy Wah Diddy (Ditty Wah Ditty) is formed with Paul Erickson on Drums, Paul Sanders on bass, and Steve and I on guitar(Jeff Mooridian moves somewhere and is gone for a time from Fargo -so December's Children days come to an end). We play all summer and as young people are want to do, dramatics happen and somehow the band disintegrates in the fall and Steve Mann moves to Mpls leaving Paul, Paul and I to form the next version of Floored as a three-piece, although we originally called ourselves "Geeks." We are just getting going when winter arrives and Paul Sanders and I decide to forgo the winter in Fargo and move to Utah and California, respectively. We come back in the spring and Floored picks up some steam until we actually start sounding like a band - somewhere between MC5, Dinosaur Jr, and The Stooges. Many recordings are made and several shows happen that only a handful of people ever witnessed. We develop many songs and dream of making it, but we never manage to gain an audience or win a bit of luck.

Meanwhile, Paul E spends his free time plunking around on the bass and smoking pot while talking with his good friend Joel Longtine aka Moleman. Mostly, they listen to music all day long, but over many bowls the idea of Hammerhead is borne among heavy bass licks and the story of the Gremlin Brother twins - Roky and Roly (Get it? Rock and Roll...). Paul is Roky and I am his twin brother Roly. Jeff Mooridian is Renny and Paul Sanders is Rummy who only gets to watch his older brothers while trying to stay out of their way. Roky, Roly and Renny are rocking in the basement and suddenly out the dirt floor emerges Moleman. Joel was a budding cartoonist and the story has a comic book plot and was talked about more than actually drawn or written. There are plans of long haired wigs and platfrom shoes (Floored was banned from Ralph's and Kirby's for long periods of time because we were too loud - thus incognito) with guitar straps shortened and bell bottom slacks. Anyway, the culmination was a show at 7th street entry on Tuesday new band night in the spring of 1990 (Paul Erickson had a tape of this show, but don't know if he still has it). December's Children opened, followed by Diddy-Wah-Diddy, and then Hammerhead's first show. Floored closed out the night. Hammerhead was the highlight of the evening (Moleman was on fire and did the highest flying scissor kick I'd ever seen in my life - even if he did end up landing flat on his ass, it was mega-cool), although all bands put on great shows even with a shortened Floored set due to personality breakdowns from a long, drunk and drug filled evening.

Let me see..., more dramatics, and Floored is still going through the summer of 1990 in Fargo. Diddy-Wah-Diddy reforms and disbands over more dramatics (there were punches thrown in there somewhere, but nobody hurt much - other than ego and pride). Paul E is forced to move out of his small home on the North West edge of Moorhead in the fall which had been established as the practice place and late night party house. I suddenly get a sense of the futility of it all and tell Paul E and Paul S, that my time in the band is coming to a close. "Wait," they tell me, "we have a gig at the Uptown in Minneapolis opening for a band called 'The Cows!'" "Sorry," I reply, "I'm out of here." Well, the rest is history. Paul, Jeff and Paul put together the new Hammerhead in short time with Paul S taking my place on guitar and without Moleman on vocals. There are a few shows bringing back Moleman, but the bright lights are not for him. I observe from afar as my old friends enjoy success I once craved.

It was all good times and I think we all made some great music that not many people ever had a chance to hear - with the exception of the last incarnation of Hammerhead. Oh well, Vaz is still going strong and Paul S is playing with some guys in Mpls at the moment (Herione Sheiks - I believe). Joel Longtine lives in Duluth and plays percussion for an experimental band called Idee Fixe. Steve Mann lives in Northern Minnesota and is often mistaken for Sasquatch due to his penchant for running naked in the woods. He is still making recordings last I heard. I strum my guitar in the basement a couple times a month for my six year old son and try and convince him I was once a rock-n-roll star. Who was I kidding?

-Andy Bahn

ps. I dream of a 7th street entry (First Avenue-if there ever is enough interest?) 20 year reunion show in the spring of 2010, but have no idea how to get the blokes together again. December's Children, Diddy-wah-Diddy, Hammerhead (Roky, Rolly, Renny and Moleman) and Floored, with a special appearance of Hammerhead (Paul, Paul and Jeff) to end the night with. Do you think I can pull it off? Any help out there? Suggestions? Encouragement? Anything?

Testimony Moleman
A.B. tells it pretty much right on. I have a couple of nuggets that might be of interest. Hammerhead was named not after a shark or a carpenter's tool but after a term bartenders used for dishwashers at a hotel I worked at. e.g. "Hey Hammerhead! hurry up and wash those wine glasses." I was a dishwasher and not a bartender.

Hammerhead was heavily influenced by the group Steel Pole Bathtub. I remember listening to their first album over and over with Paul E. He usually liked classic stuff like the Stooges but he was heavily influenced by the Tub. If you like Hammerhead and have never heard SPBT- check them out. "Tulip is a great album."

A.B. is correct about the "Gremlin Brother" story- Roky, Roly, Renny, and Rummy all had the last name of Gremlin. This led to the great instrumental track "Gremlin Stomp". Paul E. told me the rythmn for this song was inspired by watching my drunken gate during a long walk home from a rock and roll party. Although its true I never got around to writing the "Gremlin Brothers" story I did create a number of comic stories from the Lyrics I wrote for hammerhead. "Anvil Mcgillus", "Locomotive to Moosejaw," and "A Fitting End to a Ridiculous Life" are some that I remember. They appeared in "Snipehunt" magazine based out of Portland, OR. None of my lyrics appeared on the albums, mainly because I rarely wrote them down. I usually had a verse I could repeat over and over and a story line I could ad lib from. The song "moleboy" may have some of the original lyrics...too long ago, can't remember.

During the time Hammerhead was forming Paul E. approached me about writing lyrics and perhaps being the singer because "no one in the band wanted to sing" I suggested that they play as an instrumental band because lead singers are usually dead weight anyway. I still believe bands are usually successful despite their lead singers and not because of them. (this only applies to singers who don't play another instrument). A few weeks after Paul E. approached me my roomate walked in on me rocking out to THE STOOGES "sick of you". I think I was doing a knee slide on the coffee table when he walked in. Paul E.and guitarist Andy B. got wind of this and approached me again believing I had some latent desire to be a rock and roll singer. I told them IGGY was an entirely different matter. Anyway, they talked me into being the next Iggy Pop and I gave it a try and failed good and proper.

Hammerhead was a great band. I saw plenty of shows throughout the years and they were getting better and better. They are all up to some cool stuff these days but that combination of two pauls and Jeff M. Rocked as hard as any one has. It was fun to be there for some of it.

Highlights
*There was a show in the early 90s at the Elk's Lodge in Fargo that was just insane. The place was packed and the band threw down like there was no tomorrow. If I didn't know better, I'd have thought that Hammerhead was involved with the wrecking-ball that took down the Elk's Lodge. -ryan
*Yes - Orange 17 opened that show and godheadsilo played right before Hammerhead. That show was pretty much the most fun I've ever had at a show. -joe
About
Mark Shroeder was a piano player who hung out with the December Children's boys and, despite being of the same age, was considered the wise old musician.

If you never had the pleasure of hearing Mark sit down on the piano in the back room of Ralph's you missed an important part of Fargo/Moorhead music history. Mark had Tom Waits looks along with his voice and charisma.

Spooky chunks was his band and I wish I could remember the names of all the guys in it. They were all a bit older and much better musicians than the boys in December's Children with the exception of Paul Erickson. Mark also often went by the moniker of Spooky. Another pleasure that only a few people ever had a chance to see was Mark coming out from behind his Wurlitzer as the band played behind him and treating his audience to a Spooky Chunk's jig. There was never a cooler cat than Spooky. (Andy Bahn)
When I was living in St. Cloud I scheduled December's Children to come down and play a party at the house I was living in. The house was packed and the party quickly got out of hand. By the end of the evening the house was completely destroyed. Holes punched in walls, bathroom fixtures tore from walls, basement flooded, graffiti all over, windows broken, etc.

Mark was playing bass for December's Children and in the morning I was in a funk trying to figure out how I was going to explain this one to my landlord. We were sitting around the destroyed living room amongst the rubble and Mark picked up my acoustic guitar and started playing and singing songs. He did J. J. Cale's The River and as the sun shone in from a window on him he did an impromptu version of John Denver's "Sunshine on my Shoulder." My spirits were temporarily lifted until the doorbell rang and I answered the door to find my landlord standing there with someone he was showing the house to. He walked in and saw the rumpled and hungover crew of December's Children and posse sitting amidst the destroyed house and just nodded his head repeating, "great, this is great." He toured the house and walked out. I didn't get my deposit back. (Andy Bahn)

First off, it was Diddy-wah-Diddy (Doesn't anyone listen to Bo Diddley, anymore?).
Four piece band formed while Jeff Mooridian stepped away from Moorhead and Andy Bahn moved in. Next in line of Bands paving the way to Hammerhead. Three song writers, but the best songs were all Steve Manns.
*Andy Bahn Lead Guitar and Vocals

About
Most of the inspiration for this band comes from Steve Mann.

Do it all the time;

Two Nickles to Rub;

Stop on a dime;

By the last song it was customary to be completely naked with our guitars slung low and our pieces hanging over the top of the guitar. The summer of '88 has long been referred to as "the naked summer" by many of the boys present for a multitude of reasons.

Mostly, they listen to music all day long, but over many bowls the idea of Hammerhead is borne among heavy bass licks and the story of the Gremlin Brother twins - Roky and Rolly (Get it?

Joel Longtine lives in Duluth and plays percussion for an experimental band called Idee Fixee.

[Someone can probably do a better job explaining this than I can (and please do)... the band got their start in Fargo, hooked up with Amphetamine Reptile Records somewhere along the way and then moved to Minneapolis, toured like mad, released a bunch of records and broke up.

Mostly, they listen to music all day long, but over many bowls the idea of Hammerhead is borne among heavy bass licks and the story of the Gremlin Brother twins - Roky and Rolly (Get it?

Joel Longtine lives in Duluth and plays percussion for an experimental band called Idee Fixee.

-joe

And Thumpy, truth be told, was a damn good bass player (In my mind, Thumpy is always the bass player and Frankie Machine is the drummer), but once he heard the genesis of Hammerhead that Rodney (now, Roky Gremlin) was creating on Bass with Jeff(Renny) on Drums and I (Roly) on guitar, his heart began drifting away from Floored.

It was a vintage one made entirely of steel and the paint was fresh with no rust and greased bearings, but taking that ride down the mountain on Thumpy's roads was treacherous - to say the least.

(Andy Bahn)

Mostly, they listen to music all day long, but over many bowls the idea of Hammerhead is borne among heavy bass licks and the story of the Gremlin Brother twins - Roky and Rolly (Get it? Rock and Roll...). Paul is Roky and I am his twin brother Rolly. Jeff Mooridian is Renny and Paul Sanders is Rummy who only gets to watch his older brothers while trying to stay out of their way. Roky, Rolly and Renny are rocking in the basement and suddenly out the dirt floor emerges Moleman.

Joel Longtine lives in Duluth and plays percussion for an experimental band called Idee Fixee.

-joe

And Thumpy, truth be told, was a damn good bass player (In my mind, Thumpy is always the bass player and Frankie Machine is the drummer), but once he heard the genesis of Hammerhead that Rodney (now, Roky Gremlin) was creating on Bass with Jeff(Renny) on Drums and I (Rolly) on guitar, his heart began drifting away from Floored.

It was a vintage one made entirely of steel and the paint was fresh with no rust and greased bearings, but taking that ride down the mountain on Thumpy's roads was treacherous - to say the least.
